We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. Everybody showed a lot of support through the whole process of the competition. The teachers made up posters, telling everyone to rate and review us on unearthed and put them up all over the school. It’s a huge thing for this to happen to our school, so everybody is full of excitement. Some of the kids haven’t seen us play before so they’re looking forward to that, but having British India come to little Gisborne is awesome. It’s going to be a very exciting day for everyone. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. Everybody showed a lot of support through the whole process of the competition. The teachers made up posters, telling everyone to rate and review us on unearthed and put them up all over the school. It’s a huge thing for this to happen to our school, so everybody is full of excitement. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. Everybody showed a lot of support through the whole process of the competition. The teachers made up posters, telling everyone to rate and review us on unearthed and put them up all over the school. It’s a huge thing for this to happen to our school, so everybody is full of excitement. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Headlining the day were Sydney-based rock bands, RuinGloria and The Take. Also on the bill were popular Sydney inide bands- I am Apollo, and New Blasé, Battle of the Bands runner-up Fortune Fails and the Battle of the Bands winners Futures in Black and White.

Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Also on the bill were popular Sydney inide bands- I am Apollo, and New Blasé, Battle of the Bands runner-up Fortune Fails and the Battle of the Bands winners Futures in Black and White.

Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Also on the bill were popular Sydney inide bands- I am Apollo, and New Blasé, Battle of the Bands runner-up Fortune Fails and the Battle of the Bands winners Futures in Black and White.

Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. Everybody showed a lot of support through the whole process of the competition. The teachers made up posters, telling everyone to rate and review us on unearthed and put them up all over the school. Young band ‘Voltage’ opened the night, building the atmosphere with their energetic rendition of ACDC’s ‘Shook me all night long’. Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. It was a close competition, but Jamie Hibberson was a well-deserving winner with great song choice and overall entertainment value, really engaging the audience.” Organisers of Cowra’s “Home Grown” concert would like to acknowledge the support they received from Indent, a Music NSW initiative supporting all ages music events. Other activities offered on the day included skating, box tag, and getting your picture drawn by a local caricature artist.

Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

Visiting solo act, Dylan Wright, showed he has the potential to go further with some smooth cover songs, whilst well-known local drummer, Travis Nash and guitarist Darcy Coates, added a heavier presence backing bands, ‘Dressed to Kill’ and ‘Dead Wrong’. Lead singers Ethan Cupitt and Brooke Nash produced admirable vocal performances. The ‘Switch’ duo of Michaela Jeffries and Darcy Ford added yet another dimension to the contest with their introductory song from the Dixie Chicks. Prize winning honours on the night went to soloist Jamie Hibberson for a highly entertaining performance, displaying versatility and an inept ability to engage the audience. The crowd responded vigorously to Jamie’s lively act, appreciating his rendition of ‘Tribute’, followed by a beautiful performance of Neil Young’s “Heart of Gold”, and concluding with an original instrumental composition. Emerging band, ’To be Decided’, with lead vocals by Jordan Core, combining with Mat Jones and Corey Hudson on guitar, also caught the judges attention finishing in second place with some tight technical musicianship. Not to be forgotten, Reece Downing took out third place, surprising many of his loyal followers with an acoustic solo act that included his own rendition of an Abba classic! Competition judge, Leigh Morrissey, was most impressed with the calibre of the performers, from rock groups to duo and solo performances. “The standard of this year’s event was high and it was great to see so many young performers putting themselves out there. We considered several criteria in judging the performances – musicianship, originality, stage presence and overall presentation. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform over three nights. The Battle of the Bands began with auditions on the 6th of March. Twelve (12) local bands were selected from twenty-three (23) applicants to perform at the heats for the chance to be one of the six (6) finalists for 2010. At the conclusion of the auditions, a professional band development workshop was facilitated by Tony Ward, owner of Studio 57 Taren Point and Billy Hyde Caringbah. The workshop was a great opportunity for all bands to receive advice from people working within the industry. Heat one saw over 250 people attend to support the Sutherland Shire’s local talent. Of the six (6) competing bands, Toys of Counter Culture, Machines of Me and crowd favourites Tempest Released went through to the final. Heat two saw over 450 people attend to support their favourite local talent. Fortune Fails, Futures in Black and White and people’s choice Eilish for Burning secured the remaining three places in the finals. On Friday the 9th of April, over 700 people attended the finals held at Sutherland Entertainment Centre to support the six (6) finalists. Our judges for the night, Sean (Indent and MusicNSW), Nathan (Studio 57 and the Julius Set), Dave (Billy Hyde), Mark (Shire Events Crew), and Kate (Shire Events Crew) were amazed by the talent on the night. The final point score of the night was very close with third place being tied between Toys of Counter Culture and Machines of Me. To the delight of the crowd, second place went to Fortune Fails, who secured a place at council’s Down the Park Youth week music festival. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

We’re four sisters from the sticks who play 70s influenced rock. Our eldest sister Amy (20) sings lead vocals and plays drums- she’s the one that takes charge. Hannah (17) is on guitar and backing vocals- she’s the serious one. Sarah (16) is on keys and backing vocals- she’s the one that’s unexpectedly insane. And last but not least, our youngest sister, Holly (12) on bass and backing vocals- very young, but also very bold. We all started playing our instruments at the same time and playing in a band together seemed like the logical thing to do. Band practice is easy when you’re under the same roof and we get along pretty well most of the time so sibling rivalry didn’t seem like too much of a problem. How would you describe your sound? From where do you draw inspiration and what drives your passion for music? We’re influenced by 70s rock – Hendrix, Zeppelin, Zappa, but we add our own modern touch. Music feels like it’s in our blood. We can’t imagine life without it. Where have you played, and what was your favourite venue and why? We’ve played in a lot of different types of venues from small country pubs and town halls, the iconic Espy [The Esplanade], Fed square and St Kilda Festival. The Espy in St Kilda has probably been the best so far. It’s just a great venue with good vibes. Congratulations on winning the triple j Unearthed High competition. Where do you plan on taking your music from here? Thank you! We are recording an EP this year. We plan to play heaps of shows and get our music out there as much as we can. Long term it would be the ultimate to continue our music and be able to live off of it. We would love for our music to take us over seas. A big goal is to inspire as many young people as we can to start playing music. How does it feel to be recognised for your music and on a national scale? It feels amazing, weird, crazy and amazing again, although it still feels so surreal. Before this happened, we had fans from around the area and a few other random people that have seen us at gigs. Now friends are telling us that their friends are recommending our band, without realising that they already know us. To have people from other parts of the country appreciating our music is amazing. We wondered what it would be like to hear ourselves on the radio, and now we know. I was driving with my friend in the passenger seat last night and suddenly my voice was on the radio. It’s so strange, but an awesome feeling. One part of your prize is a professional recording session of one of your songs. Which song have you chosen to record and why? I’ll just talk about Foreign Lover… Foreign Lover was inspired by a massive family holiday to the states at the start of this year. We saved up for a long time to be able to go over and see We saved up for a long time to go over and see ‘Zappa plays Zappa’ - Dweezil Zappa and his band playing his father, Frank Zappa's music. They are an amazing band. Incredible musicians. They played on what is called Jam Cruise. It’s basically a music festival on a cruise ship. We sailed through the Caribbean, all the while listening to some truly amazing bands. The whole experience was just a huge inspiration to write a song and Foreign Lover was the result. Do you plan on doing anything with your music while you’re recording your song in Sydney? Unfortunately I don’t think that time will allow. We’ll make sure we come back and play a show at some point though! It would be awesome fun to play in another city. triple j will also be hosting a gig at your school in Gisborne, Victoria. British India will be headlining, and your band will be supporting. What have you got planned for this event? And what is the general vibe at school? We plan to give a high-energy set and hopefully get everyone up and moving. Gisborne Secondary College is a country, government school. The winning band Futures in Black and White took home prizes including: a 0 Billy Hyde gift voucher, a 3 hour rehearsal package at Studio 57, a 4 hour recording package, 20 printed t-shirts and 5 printed hoodies, 0 worth of promotional printing, professional photos from their performance, a 30 minute set at Sutherland Shire Council’s annual Down the Park music festival. After winning the 2010 Battle of the Bands, Futures in Black and White’s plan to tour Europe.

It is led by a group of volunteer broadcasters from the station that have seen a need for more young people to engage with the music and the medium of radio. They are looking for high school students and young adults with an interest in this music to become involved. This is specific to the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, but it might inform people wanting to do similar things (for any genre of music) around the country, particular in community radio. Check out the full news story here. Things to do on Saturday Moreover, this Saturday is jam packed full of things to see, hear and do. If you're into experimental sounds and music, there's a fantastic live performance of experimental and exploratory sounds, across all genres. High Reflections, is a series, and this weekend's edition will be the ninth in the series. Performances will begin from 8PM-11PM with artists: Hell Spirits, The Singing Skies, and Emily McDaniel. There could be a small fee involved- $7 is the figure I'm being told about, but I couldn't for the life of me find out any more than that. If you happen to be in or near Alexandria at around lunchtime on Saturday- why not head over the Studio 301 for FBi's Music Open Day. There'll be a bunch of special industry guests who will be able to give you advice on your music. There will also be a free BBQ, and for those who are of legal drinking age, that is to say- aged 18 or over- there will be some alcholic refreshments provided too.
