So today was the final day of our tour around regional New South Wales. We finish up in Bega. Until now, I only knew Bega for it’s cheese…mmmm cheese.

But after spending some time in the local community, I realized there was so much more going on within this Shire. Bega is a vibrant town filled with so many passionate musicians and arts workers who are working hard to enrich the music scene within the community. It was inspiring to see!

In the afternoon we met a lovely bunch of young people who were eager to get on board with the Indent tour. Check them out!

We also were lucky enough to visit the famous Magic Mountain. It’s pretty much the coolest place, ever. If you haven’t been there yet I highly recommend it! There are dinosaurs!

We decided to spend the last night of the tour at a local gig which had been organized by the local youth in Merimbula. It was the launch of I Soar, The Eagle’s EP a hardcore gig. We felt like (and probably were) the oldest people there but we still had an awesome time! You can check them out at http://www.triplejunearthed.com/ISoarTheEagle

So that wraps up our tour of regional NSW. We’ve learnt a lot about the communities and we will be continuing to work with them into the future to help build, enrich and sustain a vibrant music culture amongst the young people in each area. It was inspiring for us to see so many young people wanting to get involved with the Indent tour, and we were lucky enough to meet with some truly talented people in each town.

Meg, Chris and I sincerely thank all those in each community who participated. Until next time…

Today we embarked on the second week of our tour, which we begin in Kiama. After a 2 hour drive in the sunny morning we arrived at the beautiful beach town and met with the local members of the council and music community. We gained some great insight into the needs of the locals and it was a great opportunity to meet up with some of the young aspiring talent in the area.

After our roundtable meeting we grabbed some awesome fish and chips and went to check out the blow hole. How cool are blow holes? Then in the afternoon we went to meet up with some of the local high school students in the area who were passionate about building an all ages music scene in Kiama.

We ended our night eating some great local Vietnamese. It was the first time I’d ever tried Vietnamese (Meg suggested I try it, it’s her favourite cuisine). I ordered a seafood noodle…thing. It was amazing, you should all try it!

Off for a 5 hour drive to our final destination, the land of the cheese-Bega, tomorrow morning. I’m determined to find a cheese factory.

After an early morning two hour car drive through the misty country side, Chris, Meg and I arrived in Cowra. After grabbing a great breakfast at a local cafe, we had the chance to meet up with the local council members, media and arts workers to discuss how the youth music scene was progressing in Cowra. After the informative roundtable meeting we were recommended to eat lunch at a fantastic local cafe called Burp!

I ate the best spud I have had in years. They also have some tasty caramel thickshakes!

After lunch we were lucky enough to meet up with the students from the local highschools in Cowra. They gave us some great insight into how music in consumed in Cowra, the local music hang outs and the best bands and soloists performing around the area. The youth in Cowra were excited about the upcoming tour and we were excited to see how enthusiastic they all were to jump on board!

That evening after Meg, Chris and I checked into a local hotel, we dined out at local pub The Imperial. After taking hours to decide what to eat off their mouthwatering menu, I settled on some local steak. Gooooooood choice.

Tomorrow we head for another three hour drive to Dubbo…stay tuned!

DAY 1

So our first day of the Indent tour is already drawing to a close. I’m currently sitting in a cosy motel in the heart of West Wyalong with the rest of the Indent team Meg and Chris. As I’m writing this, Chris is reading this weeks edition of The Brag, and Meg is watching a snowboarding film on her laptop. Before I surrender myself to sleep, I want to share with all of you some of what we have experienced on our journey so far.

We began our journey with a 7 hour road trip from our little office in Surry Hills to West Wyalong, a small town approximately 1.5 hours south west of Wagga. A couple of hours into our trip, we came across The Grand Marino. This is a photo of us standing next to the biggest sheep in Australia, if not the world?!

As we continued on, about an hour later I spotted a pony! I jumped out and walked slowly up to it, and to my suprise it came up to me and let me pat him (or her?) on the head! I snapped this photo before we drove off….isn’t it cute?!

Three hours later, we arrived in the Shire of Bland.

After dining at the local Senior and Citizens club and getting a good nights shut eye, we woke up this morning feeling pretty excited about meeting with some members of the local community. We had our first Roundtable of the tour which gave us the chance to discuss the needs of the West Wyalong music and youth scene with local teachers, events coordinators, council members and media.

After enjoying a great lunch at the local Cafe Peckish, we then ran our first workshop of the tour. It was a great chance to meet with some local youths who are as passionate about music and events as we are! We have found a great team that we will work with throughout the tour to make it extra amazing! Check ‘em out…

So that brings me to the end of the first chapter of our tour. Tomorrow morning we drive to Cowra, so stay tuned for more updates from the road from yours truly…

How many episodes in the Australia Classic Albums series start with a band hijacking Sydney’s BJB Studios in the middle of the night, roping their producer out of the control room to play bass in a distortion filled sludgy jam just after he hits record, mixing it all in the space of 5 hours before their front man has to clock in at his 9am to 5pm job?

Double Doomin’ is the latest release from Sydney band Michael Crafter (the power violence posse, definitely not THAT Prom Queen) and it’s a throat ripping affair! It’s not for the faint hearted as guitarist Matheson Vaughn and drummer Dave Bate take their super-charged power violence past and cram it into the form of a sonic heart attack!

Produced by BJB’s whizkid (and Double Doomin’ bassist) Jean-Paul Fung, it’s a purely instrumental album full of dirty, dirge-infested droning songs that would make proud, seeping into one as “Slurry Pills” becomes “Heavy Mental” which becomes “Early Bird”.

Put simply, Double Doomin’ is extremely heavy and full of hypnotising feedback. For example, closing song “Settle Doom Mrs. Doubtfire” is almost 23 times longer than any previous song Michael Crafter has released. Talk about a band that goes from one extreme to the other! Don’t expect to “get it” on first listen, but I dare you to try!

You can check it out for free, here.

Like a fine wine, The Waifs are getting better with age with their sixth record Temptation. Possibly their strongest cohesive vision yet, the band have crafted an impressive batch of songs that will touch the melancholy and heartache in our hearts.

Recorded in just ten days in a Minneapolis basement, the album is indeed tempting. The strength of The Waifs remains their three part harmonies, which inject huge vocal swells into the slow chug of “I Learn The Hardway” and the gospel-tinged title track.

The blues-inflected “Moses” recalls a past era of scratched vinyl, whilst “Buffalo” paves the way with palm-muted chords that meanders beautifully into the plaintive “Just Like Me”. “Drifting Dreamer” does just that in the most whimsical of ways.

Highlights on the album are “Beautiful Night”, which shifts along with a subtle Sheryl Crow-esque groove and the cathartic “Somedays”, which shows songwriter Vikki Thorn wearing her heart on her sleeve, “Somedays I just want to ditch my responsibilities/leave behind dirty dishes/dirty floors”.

For all of those people who haven’t paid attention to The Waifs since their break out songs London Still and Lighthouse – it’s a truly relaxing listen, best enjoyed with a bottle of red over a candlelit dinner.

Breaking away from their pub rock roots as Powerage with a new line-up and sonic approach, Newcastle/Hunter Valley band Jupiter Menace has delivered a strong debut self-titled EP. Full of supercharged guitar solos and youthful enthusiasm, this slickly produced EP is a perfect mission statement for the young band.

After cutting their teeth in front of hardened biker audiences and pub-rock crowds, Jupiter Menace have managed to harness that danger with interesting arrangement, stronger song writing and a stronger sense of melody. “Break These Chains” kicks things off with a stomping beat, big riffs and big chorus, whilst “Can’t Stand Alone” opens with soft picking and piercing lead breaks.

“The Dawn Has Broken” showcases vocalist/guitarist Zac Crawford’s best performance, but the strength of Jupiter Menace is their great rhythm section arrangements. Benn Grimas’s bass lines are intricate and imaginative, snaking between groovy, rock-driven beats thanks to Ben Crawford. Highlights include the groovy, fast paced guitar licks of “This Time We’ll Run” and the slow building “Tomorrow’s Fears”.

Showcasing a more sophisticated musical palette than ever, Jupiter Menace will be a band to watch during 2011.
