Following a series of discussions with City of Sydney Youth Services and some key music industry patrons, Indent and the COS held a Youth and Music Roundtable on January 24 which explored the opportunities and hurdles for maximising youth participation in live music in Sydney.

The roundtable was a great chance for open discussion between Indent, the council and key stakeholders of the youth music and arts industry, addressing how to increase accessibility, cultural awareness and artistic development amongst Sydney’s youth culture.

This introductory roundtable meeting will be the first in an ongoing dialogue between Indent, The City of Sydney and Sydney’s music and arts community, and will be used to influence policy and to advocate on behalf of the youth centre within the contemporary music industry.

The Foundation for Young Australians (FYA) have just released their latest report How Young People are Faring (HYPAF) 2011.

The report is the released as part of an an annual series on the employment and education situation of young Australians. The HYPAF report demostrates two significant long-term trends-that the stability of working life for young people has steadily decreased and Australia’s economic prosperity is consistently not being passed on to many young people.

The key findings from the report include the following:

more than one quarter of all long-term unemployed Australians are now aged 15 to 24

since 2008, the percentage of young Australians without a job for a year or longer has almost doubled

despite Australia’s relative economic buoyancy, teenagers in Australia have higher rates of long-term unemployment than in many other OECD countries.

To read the report head here.

NSW Minister for the Arts Hon. George Souris today announced $110,000 in funding to assist young people throughout the State to stage their own all ages, drug and alcohol free music events.

Indent, the peak youth network for contemporary music and a proud project of MusicNSW, will distribute the funds in the form of Partnership Grants and the continuation of the tour in 2012. The Partnership Grants across two categories will fund all ages’ festivals, music video competitions, band nights and competitions. Indent is also reinvesting $2,500 back into the program to fund an extra team.

“The Indent project is a key skills development opportunity for any young person interested in finding out more about the music and entertainment industries.” Mr Souris said.

“From the grants, the tour and the many workshops on offer, Indent empowers young people by giving them the skills and confidence to take control of their local youth events.”

The Partnership Grants give young people the skills, resources and support to stage their own events and take control of their local all ages scene and a stage for hundreds of young bands to showcase their outstanding talents.

The tour engages young people in a professional development opportunity to work on an industry standard event and tour a professional band through regional NSW. Local teams will stage their own event in partnership with Indent and surrounding youth. The teams involved in the 2012 tour will be invited based on their previous applications under the partnership grants.

In addition to the 2012 grants, Indent will provide further assistance to young people wanting to find out more about the all ages industry through the launch of “X Festival: A Do – It – Yourself Guide To Running Music Events”, the annual Open Day mini-conference on March 9 and the continued annual workshop program.

44th Sunset were amongst five national finalists to perform before a crowd of 200 invited guests and a panel of industry judges at Sydney’s The Lair at the Metro Theatre last Sunday night.

Judge Glen Matthews, COO and co-founder of MySchoolAct said it was Thompson’s charisma which lead to the win. “The front man for 44th Sunset was unique, he was engaging with the audience and he lifted the crowd to a new height with his performance,” said Matthews.

In addition, all five finalists will perform next year’s Big Day Out in their hometown with Southport State School’s Double Lined Minority playing Gold Coast; Sons of Alamo of Central Coast Grammar School playing Sydney; Bundoora Secondary College’s Let’s Not Pretend playing the Melbourne festival and Love Cream from Unley High School performing the Adelaide Big Day Out.
