Calling out to all bands in NSW, regional and metro, to submit entries to YouthRock band competition. This year the venue will again be at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre.

A panel of industry judges has whittled this down to a close 10 bands- selecting 2 bands to represent each state.

Sydney is being represented by last year’s YouthRock winners- Stolen Memories and The Inheritors. The bands now have just four weeks to wrestle up enough support through a self driven marketing campaign including print media, airplay on Nova FM networks, MySpace Music exposure and AccessAllAreas.net.au. Nominees must be between the ages of 14 and 21 years, and can apply for ONE scholarship per year.

Nominations are encouraged from young people with genuine talent, ability and determination in any field, including: educations and training, visual or performing arts; sport; trade skills; and music.

The wide-ranging goals pursued by the scholarship recipients will encourage other disadvantaged young people to follow their dreams.

Each scholarship recipient will be teamed up with a mentor who will provide guidance and support throughout the duration of the scholarship program.

The 10 billionth song that was bought by Louie Sulcer of Woodstock, Georgia, was a hit by Johnny Cash, Guess Things Happen That Way.

As part of Apple’s countdown to 10 Billion Songs, Louie will receive a US$10,000 iTunes gift voucher. That’s pretty close to a regular person’s entire collection of music 3 times over! Lucky Louie will be sure to beef up his iTunes library- what will Apple countdown next? 100 Billion songs?

to benefit people in rural and remote communities.

This collaborative approach is designed to:

• Make better, targeted use of funds improving access for rural & regional communities
• Provide a simpler application process
• Enhance efficiency and effectiveness for philanthropic trusts and foundations who wish to support small communities

Grants will be made in amounts up to $5,000. To be eligible, projects must be for a charitable purpose (benefit the whole community).  The majority of funds are unrestricted but, as this is a collaborative program, there are some grants that are restricted to Tax Concession Charity (TCC) organisations or must be granted in Victoria; the Benalla region (Victoria) or the Far North Queensland region.

The Manning Bar at Sydney University that staged licensed all ages events, that attracted a fair split between over and under 18s to their vast array of genres have announced that while they aren’t shutting down, they won’t be staging all ages music events any more.

The call comes not from the University but the Student Union who runs them and says that they want to rebrand the venue so it doesn’t include “risky” or “loose” clientele.

Alex Pye from FBI spoke up against the move in a SMH report saying: “If they are looking at problem behaviour they can’t just define it as a type of music,” she said.

In the Messandnoise article, Student Union chief Paul McJannett was quoted from a statement from union:  “All-age shows are typically where the licensee has to provide extra security controls and administration to ensure that no liquor licensing laws are breached.” This is the only explanation as to why all ages events were now banned.

The Street University exists to create opportunities for young people to realise their own innate capacity and their ability to affect change and participate in the community around them.

These guys volunteer their own time to run FREE workshops for young people, with a drop in whenever policy. Located on the corner of Speed St and Terminus St, this venue is easily accessible by public transport- with Liverpool train station about a 5 minute walk away.
