Chasing Amy

Sydney band Chasing Amy are still young, formed when four mates Justin, Peter, Brad and Chris decided they were unhappy with the direction of the local industry. Releasing a debut single in May 2010 followed by a muck about home made video and soon to release their debut EP ‘Elegant Gentlemen’ in March 2011, Chasing Amy are certainly proving that they are a band to be watching.

Who are Chasing Amy?
We are Justin, Peter, Chris and Brad.
Justin sings and is the funny one; Peter plays guitar and uses twitter way too much for his own good; Chris plays drums and is on facebook way too much; and Brad plays the bass and is addicted to COD.

What inspired the name?
Just to find something different, there were so many stupid names we went through and then Chasing Amy came to us and it sorta stuck.

So you’ve been together as a band since you were in high school. What has kept the band dynamic going?
Our strive for success. We’ve been in lots of situations where most people would’ve given up or just thought “whats the point?”, like having gotten lots of hate towards our original stuff and first few works/songs kinda actually made us think “who cares if people hate us, lets do what we want” and it made us strive to be the band we want to be, not the band that the rest of the world has seen a million times before.

How much do you think you have changed since you first started out?
LOTS! We’re constantly changing, we only recently found our “sound” with our upcoming EP ‘Elegant Gentlemen’ which comes out in March.

What artists do you draw inspiration from?
Originally it was lots of cliche American bands that all sounded the same but recently we draw inspiration from big and local Australian bands that defy the odds to prove that making music for a living in Australia is possible if you work hard enough.

What was your first gig and who was playing?
It was a dodgy little venue out in Western Sydney, really fun place actually. Can’t remember the other bands though.

What is your most memorable gig and why?
Probably when we launched our single last year at the Annandale, just had so much fun because the crowd got so into it.

Got any pre-gig riturals?
Maccas haha. And probably checking the tuning of our guitars like a million times before we go on.

What do you reckon the most important issue affecting young musicians in NSW is?
When bands and musicians think its okay to put eachother down. If bands can’t be civil towards eachother how can they expect their fans to respect them?

Got any advice for budding young bands?
To just do what makes them happy, forget what every other band is doing and forget anyone who tells you what/how to do something, just do it how you want.
