Brothers 3 is a band of brothers, literally taking their name from their biological brothership. Shardyn (14), Tayzin (13) and Makirum (12) have recently been nominated for six awards at Tamworth Fest, a world-renowned and prestigious event celebrating Country Music. An enormous achievement for a band of such a tender age. We interviewed them and got a sneak-peek into the inner-workings of the band.
What inspires you when writing your music?
We write our music on our farm, which is on the Central western slopes. We write about real stories, animals and the countryside.
What are the dynamics like in the band when writing music?
We sit around as a family and ideas just flow. Mum has crazy ideas and dad is a bit of a poet. If we talk about something or find it interesting it often turns into a song.
What goes on in the rehearsal studio?
The rehearsal studio is our front room. There’s no room to move as it is small and it is pretty loud so everyone on the street can hear us. If you swing around you knock each other over so its best just to get the practise over. We decide who plays what and make up our harmonies, then take it from there.
Got any pre-gig rituals?
Shardyn always tunes and retunes his instruments. Makirum is the more organised one and strums away or plays clarinet until it’s time to go on. Tayzin is always hungry or listens to his MP3 player.
How does it feel to be recognised for your music at a world renowned festival and at such a young age?
We feel honoured and privileged to have any of these experiences thrown at us.
What will you do if you win?
We haven’t thought about that because we are against the adults and other really good musos. Maybe next time we go to Tamworth we can stay in a motel instead of camping in the tent.
How do you think winning would affect your short-term goals?
We will just keep on writing and we certainly don’t want to move or anything. We don’t know…it would be nice to pay some bills (music lessons etc).
Who are some artists/musicans that inspire you?
John Williamson, The Robertson Brothers, Johnny Cash, Darren Cogan, Reg Poole, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Keith Urban, Slim Newton.
What do you think the most important issue facing artists in NSW is?
We are independent and all our work is self-funded. We perform because we love it and go where people want to hear our music. We are not Pop so we are in a genre that has long distances to travel. We do lots of shows for seniors and charities because we believe in giving back. This means its really hard to ever make any money.
If you weren’t musicians, what do you reckon you’d be doing?
Shardyn would be wanting to race cars or play AFL
Tayzin would be building things or taking things apart to see how they work
Makirum would be an artist and write stories. He also loves history
