This year the Mullum Music Festival shines the light on young talent with a Youth Mentorship Program.
Young musicians (under 18 years old) were invited to apply for a mentorship in four
categories: Band, World, Hip Hop and Singer Songwriter. Mentorship co-ordinator (and Cape Byron Steiner school’s music teacher) Tom Whitaker judged the applications, something he admitted to being more difficult than he anticipated.
The winning young artists were selected on the basis of their talent and also being at the stage in their creative and musical development where they could achieve the most benefit from the program’s opportunities.
‘The talent displayed in the recordings submitted was a gob-smacking reminder that we live in an area where many artists, musicians and creative types have come to breed! We also received applications from as far north as the Sunshine coast, and as far south as Coffs Harbour. The bulk of the applications came from the Byron Shire,” says mentorship co-ordinator, Tom Whitaker.
And the winners are …
- Alice Blu won the Band Mentorship with Bill Jacobi from Method
- Jordan Mylrea won the World Music Mentorship with Nano Stern (Chile)
- MinnJarrah Yarraman Jarrett won the Hip Hop Mentorship with Morganics
- Griffin Kilpatrick & Millie Hauritz won the Singer Songwriter Mentorship with Emily and Jesse Lubitz of Tinpan, Orange
The winners will have the opportunity to spend time with their mentors in a focused rehearsal session, perform their own 20-minute set at the festival as well as attend their mentors’ festival performances.
Honourable mentions and a double pass to the festival on Sunday go to Rachel Stevens of Mullumbimby, Keogh of Emerald Beach, Ben Meek of Byron, Zoey Hopkins of Bangalow and Serrinna McGrath.
