Yarn

The Australian Institute of Music (AIM) will be showcasing their annual music theatre production event in September with a series of shows, titled; Yarn. The Production is an exploration of Australian storytelling set to original scores and performed by students studying the Bachelor of music in Music Theatre.

AIM have teamed up with some of Australia’s finest creative talent to showcase these great musicals, including directors Neil Gooding (The Hatpin, Gutenberg the Musical), Kris Stewart (Resident director for Wicked and A little Night Music) and writing partnerships Peter Rutherford & James Millar (The Hatpin, LOVEBiTES), Dean Bryant & Matthew Frank (Virgins, Once We Lived Here).

Other music industry talent that are lending their experience to the production include; Burn the Floor musical Director; Charlie Hull and Fame sound operator; Andrew Foster.

“YARN is a celebration of Australian stories created by great Australian writers. At AIM we are passionate about the development of new works and encouraging of works produced by young writers, directors, choreographers, musicians and performers. To have the writers involved in the rehearsal process here at AIM has been a fantastic experience for the students. Students are required to capture the essence of five different works with contrasting performance and music styles.

AIM Music theatre Department is proud to be able to showcase some of the music Industry’s future performers and creators ” says Jennifer Murphy, head of the music theatre department.

AIM music theatre students will be performing exerts from five Australian musicals, including;

“The Silver Donkey” A lost soldier helps young friends escape the trauma of wartime through story-telling and the immense power of children’s imagination.

“Someone’s Son” Imagines the world of the Unknown Soldier in the war to end all wars. Boys not men were sent to war and men not boys came home. A story of love and innocence.

“Hash Honey” (Adaption of Byrce Courtenay’s best selling; Smoky Joe’s Café) A race against time, money and motorbikes. This intoxicating concoction mixed with a driving rock score is a heady brew. “Australia got it wrong when the vets came home from Vietnam”, and a lot of them have never recovered.

“The Virgin Wars” A socially conscious teen drags her team of cheerleaders to school halls around America promoting the virtues of chastity. Absurdly funny… absurdly absurd

“Love Bites” Is a joyous, quirky, sexy, sassy, wise, hilarious and (sometimes) heartbreaking exploration of the alpha and omega of one of life’s biggest puzzles: romance

Entry to the performances is free, however bookings are essential for each show.
