Spirit of Youth Award Registrations Open

The Qantas Spirit of Youth Awards (SOYA), has officially opened registrations to young achievers wanting to boost their careers with a once-in-a-lifetime mentorship and grants program.

Talented Australians aged 30 and under, across seven creative fields- fashion, film, visual arts, visual communications, music, industrial and object design and photography- are invited to submit their best works.

One winner will be selected from each of the seven fields who will be given financial support in the form of $5000 cash and $5000 in Qantas flights, as well as a rare 12-month mentorship opportunity with leading lights of the international creative community.

Oh Mercy, from Victoria, won last year’s SOYA in the Music Category. ‘Oh Mercy flirt with your emotions; one minute their songs are jovial, full of rhythm and layers of pop friendly lyrics and the next they are edged with salty salutations and moody stoicism. Adept and sincere the band harmonizes into one and is both bold and memorable. Before you know it you will find yourself hearing their sound before you have opened your eyes in the morning until you lay down at night. There is a reason people are still talking about Oh Mercy almost a year after their debut album, Privileged Woes, was released.’

The 2010 SOYA Music Mentor is Lee Groves. He is a British producer/writer, composer and mixer who relocated to Sydney’s Level 7 Studios (the original 301 Studios) from London in 2007. His career in music spans many years and he has worked with big names of the music industry including, Black Eyed Peas, Janet Jackson, Craig David, Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, Gwen Stefani, Dave Matthews Band, Marilyn Manson amongst many others.

Entries are now open until Monday AUGUST 9, 2010.
