Taylor King

Taylor King is a one piece band without any boundaries. Influenced by everything that can be seen, everything that can be heard; set out to evoke the deepest of emotion and thought. Based in Sydney, he has already caught the attention of many people, having been played on both Triple J and Channel V. At the age of 17, things are only going to get better and he needs you to be a part of the journey. We interviewed Taylor, check out what he has to say. Tell us a bit about yourself. Well, I'm 17 years old and if I'm not spending time with my loved ones, then I'm definitely doing something with my music, whether it is writing, playing, promoting etc. How did you get into music? Well, my Dad is one of the greatest musicians I have ever heard and he has been writing/performing since my age, so he was really my biggest inspiration. Without him, I definitely wouldn't be where I am today. Also, being touched by the music of Radiohead and Jeff Buckley from such a young age really opened my mind to what an amazing thing music really is. I didn't intentionally start writing music, it just happened. Inspired by everything that can be seen, everything that can be heard- what do you mean by this exactly? Pretty much just exactly how it reads, I love all kinds of art; I absolutely love movies and the same goes with painting/photography. I take inspiration from absolutely everything; whether it is a movie I just watched, a beautiful moment I had with someone I love or just walking down the street. You never know when you're going to be inspired. But at the same time, I never write specifically about an inspiration. You recently had a gig at Newtown RSL (February 20)- tell us how that went. The gig I had at Newtown RSL was hands down the most amazing gig I have ever played. I'm really starting to grow my fan base and people really love the music. It was so much fun, yet serious when it needed to be, and I also played standing up, which I hadn't done before. [Taylor laughs]. But the overall atmosphere was just amazing and the reaction from my fans and loved ones was overwhelming. This is going to be the benchmark for all the gigs I play! What is your favourite venue? Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to play at too many different venues but I mainly play at the Newtown RSL and the Roxbury Hotel and they are both amazing. The two venues each have really intimate settings and the people just always have a great time. Also, allowing under 18s into venues is a big thing for me, as most of the time there is not enough support for underage artists. Do you find it hard as a young person to get your music out there? It can be a lot harder. You know, it is my dream at the moment to play somewhere like the Oxford Arts Factory, but being under 18, it is really difficult. But considering my age, I have been very fortunate in getting gigs and showcasing my music. On your MySpace page, you have this wicked videoclip for Ready. Aim.- the visuals are really quite dark, yet meaningful. Who created this video, and how did you come up with the concept? I did everything for the video. I got my friend Henry to help me film some of the shots as I couldn't use a tripod for all the scenes. But yeah, I edited it all and came up with the main concept; Henry and I bounced some scene ideas off each other during filming though. I didn't necessarily come up with a concept in particular, I just went in with a few basic ideas for scenes and had most of the final product in my head; it really just feel together. That's how I love to produce art anyway, just go in with a slight idea but just let everything fall into place; its much more raw and emotional that way. Its a very personal video for me and touches on some pretty distressing topics; but I used it to emote just as I do with my song writing. With the launch of your EP, Ready. Aim. last year, you really seem to have things happening- your music has been played on Triple J and even on Channel V- where do you plan to take your music next? What is your ultimate goal/dream? Yeah, well I've been really fortunate having been played on Triple J, Channel V and FBi, to name a few. I've had an overwhelming amount of support coming from the guys at FBi and it means the absolute world. I just want people to hear my music and have it affect their lives in some way. I'm not going to lie, yes, I'ld like to make enough money from my music to survive, but in the long run its not just about the money. I mean, everyone wants their band or project to be famous, but I'll just have to wait and see what happens. Can you hint at any new music being released in the near future? Well, I consider myself to be a pretty prolific song writer and I write a lot of varying stuff; from quite experimental stuff to hardcore, prodigy-style dance stuff. I listen to so much music, and its really been showing in my song writing as of late. But, I'm hoping to release at least another single or two this year. They're not going to be too much of a departure from my sound, but they will definitely show a side of me that most people wouldn't know about.
