Reflecting on Open Day 2010

The annual Indent ISAAC Awards held Friday March 12 was a huge success with approximately 140 members attending. This wasn’t just any regular ISAAC Awards as it also marked the 10 year anniversary of Indent. The ISAAC awards, acknowledge Indent teams across NSW. Upon arrival to sunny Bondi, and the High Tide Room- our regular venue at the Bondi Pavillion- guests signed up for their afternoon workshops and received their goodies bag, lovingly filled with industry resources and promo stuff from organisations and companies operating in the music industry, it was time for keynote speakers BLUEJUICE to get up and share their experiences. In a relaxed setting the boys from Bluejuice were interviewed by triple J’s (Hack) Tom Tilley- Jake and Stav were an entertaining pair and provided a great insight into the band management side of the industry- and perhaps provided too much insight into their own personal habits. Huge thanks to Tom, Jake and Stav for their words of wisdom, inspiration and enthusiasm. Minister for The Arts, The Hon. Virginia Judge, introduced the awards ceremony with the affirmation and importance that creative projects bring to the community, and each award was presented by Indent's Project Manager- Max Becker. With a firm handshake, and professional picture taking the following awards were awarded to the best teams and individuals who were part of organising events funded by Indent in 2009.

A bigger than usual round of applause could be heard in the hall this year, with all nominated teams and individuals present- the winner was only announced on the day, creating a sense of excitement that can only be likened to The Oscars. Congratulations to all the teams for their hard work and dedication to supporting all ages music. Once again, a massive thank-you to all the supporters for making the prizes possible, and rewarding the hardworking Indent teams that were involved. After all the tiring effort of giving and receiving it was time to slice up the beautifully lush (and green) ice cream cake. The Hon. Virginia Judge, had the honours of cutting the cake- the whole Indent team + our friends from other organisations who have worked tirelessly with Indent over the past ten years, shared the spotlight in a fun photo taken by our lovely photographer Cybele Maloniski. Sean and Meg from Indent did the honours to feed the long queue of ice cream hungry members. The cakes were in the form of the numbers ONE & ZERO + a rectangle decorated in Indent logos and buses (which represent 'Driving All Ages Gigs for 10 Years'). The open forum followed with Mark Lackey (Atlas Agency), Stacey Piggot (Two Fish Out of Water) and Dean Williamson (Fisher's Gig). A member from the Moruya Indent Team took the stage while Mark Lackey was missing in action- apparently there was a kitten stuck in his car engine!! The forum covered issues like under-age drinking, policing of events and marketing. After a well deserved lunch break of tasty gourmet sandwiches, it was time for the Indent teams to head straight to the industry workshops. These included Booking Bands (Bree Carter, Select Music), Sponsorship (Kristy Ryan – Secret Sounds), Media & Publicity basics (Michaella Solar-March, Spunk Records) and Music Industry Resources (Max Becker, Indent). Last but not least, the lucky door prize was awarded to Megan Bargwanna, with a double pass to the Coaster festival held later on in the year. PPCA Artist Registration Closing Soon

If you are an Australian recording artist, or a copyright holder in recordings that are receiving airplay, there could be money waiting for you. Australian recording artists and copyright holders whose music is being broadcast are reminded that they must register with PPCA to be able to share in licence fees, collected by the organisation. Registration cut off for PPCA’s current distribution is 15 September 2010.

PPCA collects licence fees from over 50,000 businesses across Australia which play sound recordings (CD, digital downloads) and music videos. Each year, PPCA distributes the licence income collected, less administration expenses, to registered Australian recording artists and sound recording copyright owners (usually record labels). PPCA represents and pays featured Australian recording artists and record labels in the same way that APRA pays songwriters and publishers. Featured Australian recording artists may be able to share in licence fees collected by PPCA under the Artist Direct Distribution Scheme. But it’s essential that you register with PPCA before September 15 to be eligible for this year’s distribution. If you are already registered with PPCA, it is important that you notify us of all releases on which you are eligible to claim under the Artist Direct Distribution Scheme before September 15. Record labels do not notify us of artist releases or registrations – this is the artist’s responsibility. If you have released a CD within the past year and have not lodged your artist registrations, then any income that may have been earned for that release will be paid to your record label. Registering with PPCA is free and essential - If you’d like to check what artist registrations we have for you, please contact PPCA’s distribution team – we’ll be happy to help! Regional Youth: Tell It Like It Is

The ABC’s Heywire competition gives people aged 16–22 in rural and regional Australia a chance to ‘tell it like it is’ on the ABC. All they have to do is submit a story about life in their neck of the woods, or an issue in their community. Their story might be about something they’d like to see change in their town, or an incident or issue that has had an impact on them, or simply why they like living where they do. Stories can be in text, audio, photo or video formats. Teachers and youth workers can download our Heywire study guide (developed in partnership with ATOM) for ideas on how to incorporate Heywire into their programs, see here. Entries close 8 October 2010. The ABC selects approximately forty winning stories from around Australia to be produced and reworked with the help of ABC staff and they are played on Radio National, ABC Local Radio, triple j and abc.net.au! Winners also score an all-expenses-paid trip to the Heywire Youth Issues Forum in Canberra in February where they learn leadership skills, and stay at the Australian Institute of Sport. Artist comp for One Movement

The One Movement for Music conference and industry gathering will be back in Perth for its second year in October running over the weekend of Oct 9-10 at The Esplanade.

There's a big schedule of industry events like panels, workshops and keynote speeches from some serious international music industry heavyweights. Plus there's also a big line-up of live acts playing official showcase gigs. There's also a big line-up of international acts on the bill - Ben Kweller (USA), Shapeshifter (NZ), Dengue Fever (USA), ZE! (Malaysia), Delta Spirit (USA), Via Tania (USA), Raghu Dixit (India Jonneine Zapata (USA), Bedouin Soundclash (Can), KORA (NZ), The Telephones (Japan), Melodramas (UK), Liz Green (UK), Get Dexter (UK) and The Great Spy Experiment (Sing). Plus there'll be sets from local acts Xavier Rudd, Grinspoon, Children Collide, British India, Operator Please, Drapht, Cloud Control, Sally Seltmann, and heaps more. AND in an unprecedented move, One Movement and triple j Unearthed will be sending one band from every state and territory to play at the One Movement festival. That's 8 Unearthed bands we're going to pick for One Movement. 8 BANDS. THAT'S MASSIVE! Not only will you play in front of a huge Perth crowd, but all the fancy industry delegates too. Entry is simple. Register as an artist and upload your finest tracks by September 12th to be in the running. Artists already on the site are eligible and music that is 'pending' is also considered an entry. Closing date is SEPTEMBER 12.

In the event that the winner of the competition is under the age of 18 years, a guardian over the age of eighteen years must accompany the winner at the guardian's expense.
