The countdown for Christmas is on the one hand now and the list of things to do before the end of the year is getting smaller, (while the list of things to do in 2010 gets larger). Indent HQ thought it fitting to do a little summary on the year that just flew by. Maybe we'll learn from our actions, maybe we can all grow.. together.
January/February
To be honest I don't remember much of January, there was alot of promotional and open day planning that went ahead, it was the time when Rich was still with us planning the Open Day (which next year is happening March 12, 2010 so mark it in your diaries). Feb was much the same although Whichway was dong this huge workshop in Dubbo and I remember the office in Bedlem gettting ready for it.
March/April
Oh yeah this is when the year started getting crazy. Open Day was down at Bondi Pavilion where we got to hang out with the uber cool, although she's moved on now, music supervisor - Kerry. The line up on the day was massive and included Heath Mawson from Modular, Tom Tilley and Craig Schuftan from triple j, Anika Peou from Remote Control Records, Kristy Wilson and Sahara Herald Shepherd from the Big Day Out, Stephen Wade and Bree Carter from Select Music, and Chris Moller from APRA. Awesome.
We also awarded our 2009 ISAAC award winners, another bar set higher for next years awards, you can read all about the awards in this
post. Here are some memorable moments of the day, photos by Dan Boud - awesome dude - you can check out his stuff
here.

Almost immediately after this was Youth Rock, that Indent hosted the workshops prior to the finals. Then there was Youth Week, which apart from the hundreds of gigs on throughout NSW, Indent hung out with Youth Week at the Royal Easter Show. Kind of a tester to see what it was like, it was fun especially when the corn came out!
Powerage one of the Youth Rock finalists played on the youth stage, as well as the Youth Rock winners
Stolen Memories. To be honest the first day was a bit of a drag, I think it was cause we got there so early and all the really young kids and their parents were milling around, stealing our GIANT connect four and we ended up babysitting (we wanted to play NWA or Wutang to scare them off but we hesitated and stuck it out for the real peeps to come in the arvo. triple j had a stage in the evening too which was awesome we got see some cool local bands like Urthboy, Horrorshow, The John Steel Singers and Cloud Control. Mainly we were able to chill out talk to some peeps about all ages music, play connect four and muck around on the decks. Success! Check out the goss in detail
here.

May/June/July
In May we did a call out and appointed two new
Indent Advisory Group Members Jen Ryan (Aamplify in Moruya) and Melody Forghani (xrayspecs in Darlinghurst). This was the start of a very special relationship as the voice of the young people Jen and Mel were able to give us constructive feedback, help out with events and be general awesome addition to the Indent Crew. May was also the month that we launched The Minor Chord - the all ages rant in the weekly Sydney street press The Brag. From the column we've sprouted out with mulitmedia ideas and in 2010 you'll see The Minor Chord the radio segment, the blog, one day we'll have a channel on FOX and our uber cool trade mag (well maybe those two won't be a 2010 advenuture but you never know where the brand may take you)
The end of May Meg made the long trip over the Perth in WA for the Western Australian Music Industry Awards (WAMI's). The Indent equivilant of Indent is Raampaage who played the perfect host and let Meg sit in on their workshop. The WAMi Conference during the day flew over some of the most sought after in the international music industry, mainly the social media aspects. The actual awards were in one of the biggest venues in Northbridge Perth, and over three levels of completely diverse range of music ended with Downsyde on the mainstage.
Soon after we sat down over three days with members of the music industry, support organisations and young people from the Indent network to discuss the pros and cons of this here project. The feedback was really positive but the main holdback was the gap of understanding and effective communication between the young people involved in the Partnership Grants and the music industry. We're working the feedback into our next three year planning.
This was around the time that Greg left for his lil three month trip around Europe. But I'll leave him to boast about that.
On July 12, 2009 Indent hosted a Save FBI gig in response to the community radio station (FBI)'s plead for help to stay on the air. You may remember the 'ask richard' campaign which ended with some prizes from the man himself (who found out about it when some FBI fan - committed as usual - swam to Sir Richard Bransons island!) Anyway the gig raised about $1,200 big ones and sparked a mutual beneficial relationship with The Annandale Hotel who soon after the gig started up an All Ages Band comp on their famous stage. Cloud Control headlined the gig, supported by Tom Ugly, Sierra Finn and The Bennisons. Read about that
here.

August/September
This year Max and Meg, in leiu of Greg's O.S holidays, took the reigns on the Save the Scene Tour. Planning an overzealous tour we settled on a massive one including Goulburn, Wagga, Bega, Newcastle, Taree, Broken Hill and home base of Sydney. Sydney's workshop kicked off the tour at the APRA offices in Ultimo and featured talks with Andy Kelly, Bree Carter, Caroline Gates, Kirsty Brown, Chirs Moller, Tom Ugly and Tim Derricourt (from Dappled Cities). Since the workshop Tom and Tim (pictured below) have released albums. For Tom it was his debut from Tim I think this is the fourth Dappled Cities (correct me if I'm wrong) but regardless since we hung out with them they released some killer tunes (which could make excellent christmas presents for your friends) so it was really special to hear the making of their respective albums before the rest of the world were able to hear it. Read about it
here.

Leaving Sydney in the Van, together with Chris Moller from APRA and Nina Las Vegas and Sleater Brockman (or nins and levs from Heaps Decent), Max and Meg lead the team through Gouburn, Wagga and Bega on the next leg of the tour. We went from hardly anyone turning up (
Goulburn) to more than 60 in
Wagga. We also ate well on this trip. A little too well if you ask me. In Wagga on the 12th of August we celebrated Max's birthday (after the awesomely successful workshop) with some hot rocks; thanks to our local Nina who knew the ropes.

In Wagga Nina and Levs left us as the trio (Max, Meg and Moller) travelled onto Bega. Bega was a bit more relaxed and a great way to meet some of the local hero's who were able to get some personable and constructive feedback on the events that they are doing. That's the thing about the Save the Scene tour, it's different for every town we go to. Like in Tuncurry/Foster where we were on the 21st of August. This was more like a roundtable discussion that was so involved I forgot to take any pictures (Something I hope to ammend in the new year). Anyway in Tuncurry our old Corporate Director Jane Powles came and hung out with M+M and Tuncurry's team New Moon Productions to discuss the success they have had in the past and the areas that might be the weakest. One issue identified is the fact that people get older, they move out, shape up or is that ship out? Anyway a youth project always needs to be reinventing itself which I 'm quite looking forward to New Moon in th New Year!
After Tuncurry we were able to fly out to Broken Hill, the first opportuntiy we've had to get out there and meet the crew from Outback Indent and see what it's like to live in a place that is technically NSW but closer to SA and goes of SA time. Strange but we're glad they are apart of our team. B.Hill is in the process of trying to bring out the muso's from the wood works, there are plenty of people playing but more need to be playing together. It was a Beauty and was fantastic to be able to get out there, here's hoping we can return in 2010. Meg tried to be a photographer that weekend, this photo was taken just outside of Broken Hill but just before hitting Silverton.

Post Broken Hill, the MusicNSW team (Both CD's, Max and Meg from Indent and Vroom project manager - ms Tracy Redhead) jumped on a plane and headed up to the vegas' of QLD - Brisbane's Big Sound. We stayed at these apartments right next to the conference which was so good cause it was soo hot and we could just run back between sessions and jump in the pool. The Q Music (MusicNSW's sister from QLD) team are so much fun and played a great host to the hundreds who flocked to one of the biggest most internationally recognised conference in Australia. Highlights were when we helped Sounds Australia set up meetings and Max was yelled at by that lawyer type. "My Dad is a Liar. He goes to court and just lies all day", "Oh you mean a Lawyer, your dad is a Laywer", "Yeah that's what I said, a Liar" - Oh Jim Carey, we love you. This is a picture of the best burger I've ever eaten! The Burger place was right near our hotel too. Oh yeah there was some killer music in Big Sound - the creme of the crop of the next lot of artists from all over OZ.
October/November
Mondo returned to OZ just after we came back from Big Sound but went straght in to tour managing Urthboy's national tour so was only in for two days a week. The first weekend, the long weekend, in October was Sound Summit. Indent holds an annual workshop at the Loft as a part of Sound Summit, which is part of This Is Not Art (just to confuse you). We took up the opportunity to have a gig post workshop that worked out splendidly. The workshop featured Eddie Garvan (The Seabellies), Nicholas Milligan (Reverb Magazine), Marcus Wright (Big Apachee), Glenn Dickie (EMI) and Bernadette Ryan (Artist Management BRM). Following the workshop was a night of local talent which just goes to re-iterate the fact that Newcastle is the rock city of this state. Including: The Shivering Indies, Light Noise, Zero Logic, and COTA.

Straight after Save the Scene wrapped up we were straight into Partnership Grant land, assessing the grants on November 24. Also this month we met with potential sponsors, bands, partners and mapped out some very special treats for the new year - our Tenth Birthday. We are planning a whole host of parties throughout NSW! Can't wait to tell you about it.
Oh yeah in October we kicked off the first in a series of workshops in collaboartion with Liverpool PCYC. The 2168 workshops happen every couple of months in Liverpool and help build the experience, knowledge and expertise of young people in the area who are interested in working in the music industry (as managers, bands, event managers etc). On the way back ont he 23rd of October there was this beautiful rainbow over the M5 which kind of summarises the vibe on the day.
December
Technically there are only three weeks in December as everyone breaks up around the 23rd, and all of them were filled with panics, a new state government and deadlines for things pushed considerable closer than normal. On the 19th we hung out with the Access All Ages peeps at the Factory in Marrickville. Just before the gig we hung out with headliners Philadelphia Grand Jury and some local emerging bands in a casual chat about the industry, being in a band, naming the band, the legal ramifications on well everything. We then went through a walkthrough with the Joel and Simon from Philly Jays as they showed us the green room (and shared some choccies), where all the gear is kept and took us up on stage for Tom Ugly's sound check (Tom was also the graceful host). The gig itself was so much fun and apart from PGJ and Tom Ugly also playing on the night were Cassette Kids and We Are Volcanoes.

Now in case you haven't noticed we haven't announced the 2010 Partnership Grant recpients, well sorry about that. With the state of the state government and the triennal arts program announcement we havn't been able to sit down with the Arts Minister and sort it all out. We have now and have all mutually set the date of January 11, 2010 for a full line up of Grant Recipents. We look forward to announcing them then.
2010; Looking forward
Indent is turning the big 1 0! next year and there are celebrations taking over the calender for that year. To keep up to speed here are some dates for the first half of the year that you should mark down.
1. January 11, 2010 - announcing the grants
