August 10, 2009. Monday morning, 8am Max and I met in the office to do the last minute panic and pack the car with the iniatial idea of leaving by 10am. Like most great ideas, that didn’t come to fruition and finally an hour later, the Princes HWY was our present, Goulburn the not to distant future.
With Nina and Levins from Heaps Decent and Chris Moller from APRA in the back seat lookin’ righteous and i-trip firmly placed in the tour was well under way and we arrived in Goulburn with enough time to eat lunch, check into the hotel, buy Boogie Nights and Mean Girls on DVD and still set up for the first workshop at 4pm at the Regional Conservatorium.
So here’s what Save the Scene is about, a free music industry/business workshop in a town near you, we feed you pizza, we bring the professionals and we give you some advice on how you can maybe enhance your local all ages music scene, get your band more gigs, establish some credible entertianment and all the little nitty gritty things that will combat boredom!…but we can’t make people go, so while we got alot out of talking to the people who did show up about the local Goulburn Metial scene it was disapointing not to see alot of the RSVP’s show at all. Despite the numbers it was a really great workshop because it was so intimate and we were really able to get into the depths of things that people wanted and skip over what they already knew.
PLUS It was pretty inrecdible to have Nina and Levs chase up the industry chats with an awe inspiring I wanna be a DJ workshop. If you haven’t heard of Heaps Decent, then there is something wrong with you. But that’s ok just check them out at heapsdecent.com.
The next morning we jumped in a car really early and headed to Yass for breakfast. We stopped at what I think was called the Country House Bakery on the main street. The food was pretty amazing, when we did eventually get it…was this going to be the fashion for the entire tour? The pies were O.K out of 10 they were up their but weren’t quite a 10, I had the Salmon quiche which was incredible for someone who hates egg! Eveyone was really happy when Levins got this gummy centipede, so we moved.
That afternoon, Tuesday August 11, we made it to Wagga Wagga and news that something like 70+ people were coming to our workshop! Scared that we hadn’t packed enough Resource Bags we shrugged it off and decided to play it by ear, all the while soaking up the totaly vibe-acious city of Wagga Wagga. Afer dropping Nina and Levs to Nina’s parents house Max, Moller and I stretched our legs for an afternoon of opp shopping and guitar hunting. Moller met a very helpful chap named Dale from Allison’s music store on the main street who sorted him out with a guitar for his songwriting workshop tomorrow evening.
I bought a killer suitcase, white shirt and GOLD fruit bowl. Moller and I also went halves in a jumpsuit for Max that branded him a safe driver of 27 years for max’s 24th birthday (that’s happening tomorrow, he might wear his jump suit to the workshop). After a day of leisure shopping, we all headed over to Nina’s parents house for dinner (big shout out to Ma and Pa Agzarian for their incredible hospitality). We were fed a massive serving of cous cous and lamb – I think I might dream about it tonight, and to top it all off ice cream and bananas with ICE MAGIC!
So that’s the tour to date. Tomorrow’s workshop just may be the biggest we’ve ever done and if you’re in Wagga country come down to the Civic Theatre from 4pm tomorrw August 12 (Max’s Birthday) to sit in on event management, songwriting and the Heaps Decent Hip Hop workshop. Thats if for now earthlings. Bed is nigh and more resource bags have to be packed for all the extra wagonians that want to come tomorrow. Here is a picture of my gold fruit bowl. It will go nicely in my new house.
