The Newcastle City Council voted on the inclusion of the Loft Venue in Newcastle in their sustainability plan and the final result means that the Loft is open (yay) but not safe (boo).
Here is what they had to say;
"Council will continue to use the current venue for a period of up to two years pending the development of a Youth Services Strategy to determine an appropriate service delivery model for a city-wide distributed youth service that:
- Maintains the current youth service
- Develops expansion programs throughout the LGA through increased promotion of the Loft brand
- Improve financial sustainability by optimising income through a range of initiatives
- Continues to enhance development of existing networks
- Contributes to inner city activation by using the existing site over an increased spread of hours and encouraging intergenerational collaboration
- The development of key performance indicators with a focus on achieving performance and financial outcomes with milestones to be achieved and reported to the General Manager.
- The role of the Loft facility to be added to the community facilities review as part of the ongoing Sustainability Review.
- The General Manager will provide a progress report and recommendations to Council on the development of a Youth Services Strategy by April 2010."
So basically they don't have complete faith in the Loft, which is really unnerving as they have always delievered a highly reputable entertainment program that is not only forsterting the all ages music scene but heavily supporting youth services in the area through arts, multimedia production, sound production, event management, graphic art and soo many more.
I only hope that in two years when the loft is up for review again, that they realise the worth of this 'asset' to young people in and around Newcastle.
