From humble beginnings playing all ages and charity shows around Sydney in the late 1990s, indie rockers Dappled Cities have thrived on Sydney’s live music scene, their utterly artistic and distinctive sound and their passion to contribute to the wider creative arts scene, to achieve national and international respect, acclaim and success.
The unique and creative guitar based sound of the five piece often typified by a combination of melody with complex time signatures and tempo changes, laced with falsetto vocals and the use of effects pedals resonates throughout everything the band does. Not only in the two albums, ‘A Smile’ and ‘Granddance’, the band has released to date but also in the several creative projects the band has undertaken.
Now, with a third album ‘Zounds’ due for release in August and a coinciding thirteen date national ‘Wall of Zounds’ tour, Dappled Cities have developed another creative project that combines their music and art to run alongside the new album release. Dappled Cities are searching for twenty four young emerging artists to create works inspired by their music, particularly a track off their forthcoming album, to be displayed at special launch events in Sydney and Melbourne.
The events are on the down low at this stage but what we know is that Dappled Cities will curate the two special media events in honour of their new album ‘Zounds’, the events are to be held in unique industrial locations in Sydney and Melbourne and twelve fortunate young emerging sculptors, performers, installers or photographers from each city will have their works feature at the events with all proceeds from art sales going back to the creators.
Tim Derricourt, guitarist and vocalist for Dappled Cities thinks there is no better way to pay homage to an album very close to the hearts of Dappled Cities than “collaborating with artists that may have in turn been inspired by us or just enjoyed us over the years”.
“It should shape up to be actually quite beautiful and fun” Tim also said of the event.
So I guess our advice to you, gentle reader is to keep your ears to the ground about this one because it sounds as though it’s shaping up to be something pretty special. Also, keep your ears to the airwaves because Dappled Cities first single ‘The Price’ from the forthcoming ‘Zounds’album is playing nationally. Oh, and make sure you hold onto your pay checks because tickets for the Dappled Cities ‘Wall of Zounds’ national tour with support Philadelphia Grand Jury go on sale 9am July 10.through Ticketek, Oztix, Moshtix and The Metro Theatre.
Dappled Cities will be playing as part of the an all ages Save FBi gig with MUSCLES, Grafton Primary and Decoder Ring and many more at Luna Park on Saturday June 27. Tickets @ www.bigtopsydney.com
