Last week we spoke about how the Global Financial Crisis is rearing is ugly head, and imposing on things it’s not quite welcome on! There are more Save FBi all ages gigs to come, but in the meantime TMC this week has been studying the other affect of the GFC…the budget.
BORING I know but think about this, the country is now running at a record deficit that is predicted to take years, and years and years to pay back, the bulk of which will makeup our greatest years. The billion-dollar deficit is falling heavily on our shoulders asking the youth of today to bear the brunt of the load, TMC had a look at exactly what the budget will mean for young people.
Apart from being the premier debt payer off-er’er’s the budget has made mild accommodations to secure training and education opportunities for young people, according to Jennifer Duncan the executive director of the Youth Affairs Council of South Australia who recently posted an FYI on the Budget on ABC’s hey wire blog. In general the biggest thing that stood out from the money to be put towards, securing higher education, training and employment, was the lack of communication with young people. It is predicted that unemployment is going to be the highest in young people and that we’re the ones that are going to suffer the most. Where is the dialogue with the already venerable young people on the policies and the debt that we’ve inherited?
Lets look at the positive sides of this, the government is injecting billions of dollars in spending to hopefully stimulate the national economy, the central task is of the 2009-10 budget is nation building for recover”. Whether we see this or not is a discussion for another time but TMC would like to propose a recession M.O., you can’t rely on the government to be the main stimulator, and hey in times of economic downturn apparently involvement in the arts grows! In face of recession around 64% or concert go-ers plan to go to more. So TMC’s M.O .is this if everyone stimulates their own economy we’ll all build an out of this recession, and face it we might come across some new fantastic music along the way – still bored?
Here’s what YOU can do. 1. Go and buy a CD or a record of a local band you like, at the local record store – not through a chain. 2. Go to a gig, 3. Do it all again next weekend. We figure it’s cheap and instant gratification and the best way to escape the billions dollars the government has put on our shoulders.
Stuck for ideas? Check out the gig guide at the end, or if your in Bondi this Saturday, the 30th then head down to the Bondi Pavilion and you’ll meet a host of cool kids including Drawcard, Chemical Transport, Break the Veil and these guys…Made in Japan.
All the Rage
Made in Japan can only be described as indie rock but listen to their songs you’ll hear this indifference, they are all unique but can tell they are the same – a bit like lining up a family and seeing the similar traits in all of them. Check them out if you like brit pop and anything from Bloc Party, the Futureheads, We are Scientists.
The former schoolmates have recently released their debut EP and before heading back into the studio to record their LP they’re playing a whole host of gigs around town. Including the Come Together festival in a few weeks and this weekend at Bondi Beach for BLYMP – an all ages event team that operates through WAYS.
TMC caught up with MIJ who eagerly a wait meeting their all ages fan base on Saturday, although scared they might not be able to keep up with them:
“They’re an important demographic because they’re the future music consumers and musicians so they should be encouraged and treated with respect.” Thank you MIJ! “Being of the size we are, there’s not many venues we can fill that offer all ages gigs but it would be good to play to that audience more.”
I’m pretty sure we’re talking to a brick wall, we want more all ages gigs, the bands want to play to at all ages gigs…Alls that is missing is the place to have them, unless it’s a massive auditorium and a huge band there isn’t really many venues, (save the loft) that will host All Ages gigs. Which brings us back to the M.O. go check out some live music where and when you can, as often as you can!
